Senshu Onions

The onion-cultivation began in Senshu in the Meiji era. In the middle of the Showa era, it boasted one of the largest production volumes in Japan. The history of onion-cultivation in the Senshu area began as a back crop of rice paddy since the Meiji era, when onions were just passed down from abroad.
Senshu onions are characterized by their high moisture content, sweetness, and softness.
In the Senshu area, including Izumisano city, you can see many “onion huts” where onions are hung and stored.
Sharp taste peculiar to onion is soft. The taste is so sweet that you can eat it raw during the season, and it is highly evaluated by professional cooks.
